Anyone using off the shelf template or CMS style sites like wordpress needs to make sure your website code is up to date.

Not updating our website software is probably something a lot of us are guilty of, but it is one of the biggest causes of web spam. The problem is normally the site owner has no idea their site is infected, unless you get a note from Google.

Matt Cutts, head of Googles WebSpam team says on hos blog:

I'd say. Looks like almost nothing is sacred anymore. I try to keep everything updated as well as I can. There are days when I am too busy, but I am beginning to think I should treat this in the same way I would my PC updates. If it doesn't get done, stuff will go wrong.

That's what frightens me You know 99% of those updates will work just fine, then boom, one will destroy your computer...

I have had a few OMG moments. updating a plugin on my (private) domain. Everything was fine until I refreshed, and my blog was reduced to a one line error message....

Maybe its safer to say regular backups and keeping your site up to date? I would have been lost without a backup. Seriously.
