I'm not too sure it is directly connected to SEO, maybe more SEM, Search Engine Marketing.

If you're online reputation is damaged, then it will impact your marketing efforts. SEO wise, links will still be there, and not aware of ORM being any of Googles Algorithm signals, but it's a good point, and no doubt it won't be long before it is.

But anyone marketing online should take reputation management seriously , primarily google places, and then things like directories or where you have listed yourself on review based sites.

Your reputation, online or offline is vital extremely important. I thinks ORM is more relevant to Social Media Optimization. one small part of online reputation management but a critical step indeed.
