As you may see from my logo I sell pdf software online.

So one of the products is a free viewer which is a taster of what the software can do with reduced functionality, I make no revenue from the free viewer but hope to upsell the product to people who show an interest.

So this weekend I have been running a ppc for the free pdf viewer and today for example have had 128 ppc clicks!

So the customer lands on a page that says would you like free download then click here, of the 176 page views showing for the landing page (no other way of finding it other than the ppc) 91 people clicked to the next page, which asks for your name and email address, and when filled in you get sent the link by return.

Phew lot of typing!

Anyway when you get to the email page I have today introduced that you will be entered into a monthly draw for an ipod shuffle for filling in your details.

Question would that be enough pull for you to sign up?

A prize draw of any description is always a great hook to get people interested. However it can have it's draw backs due to competition junkies. It only takes one CJ to find the prize draw and it will be posted on competition forums across the land.

If this happens it will give you false/skewed results. CJ's will give details to enter the prize draw but will never in a million years turn into a paid customer for you.

My suggestion to you is to split test the landing page. Version A no incentive and version B with incentive. As a measure you need to look at the volume/percentage of filled in request forms but more importantly the volume/percentage you turn in to an up-sale (purchaser) as this is what you are actually after.

If you have historical data for the percentage of up-sell gained from a free trial, use this as your control measure and run the split test for 14 days initially (each day of the week twice). If the initial finding are very close run for a further 14 days. If you have no historical data run for a 4 week period initially but keep a close eye on it.

I would usually say yes Tomsk, but when people are after pdf conversion (in my opinion, no facts here) I would have thought it was instant, I have a document, need it converting to a .pdf NOW!

Competitions are normally used to create longevity, repeat business, mailing lists etc, so not sure that I would personally feel the need to fill something like that in for a one off doc converter.

That said, if the people clicking through are looking for a long term solution (something they will be using often) then I think its a cracking little deal.

Sorry forgot to add........
If you are running a prize draw you need to make sure you have a T&C of how the prize draw is to be run. EG: The time length, how winner will be notified, how they claim, how long from end of prize draw to actually drawing of winner, method of drawing etc etc

Well it seems to be working - (not sure of the quality yet) 31 one people entered the prize draw today

Be interested to hear how it pans out.

Never tried the competition angle, although interesting feedback from Magnify about the competition junkies.
