A familiar brand name on the High Street, but for how much longer?

The beeb has reported they are to close 109 shops as a result of Government increases on duty for fixed odds betting machines, and a poor first quarter.

Not being a gambler myself (other than business ) I can't see the fascination, but the market must be massive judging by the sheer volume of gambling websites and money spent on TV marketing.

Maybe the old bookie model will simply move online?

I think for all bookmakers online gambling websites out perform the high street shop, firstly the majority of them are based offshore usually in Guernsey whether this is for tax reasons or legal reasons I'm not sure. However believe it or not they are just virtual offices and no more than that. Not sure of the running costs of maintaining gambling websites, but I would assume that its a lot cheaper than the running costs of having a shop in every high street. A fair lot of gamblers smoke and drink, you cannot do either anymore in the betting shop, but you can online, if you want to play poker at 4am you can online but the shop is closed, from a security point of view bookmakers are more secure from trading online than from having a shop, less staff to pay wages too also. There is also an issue with car parking, without being able to park without the risk of a parking ticket town centers will gradually become a thing of the past. I've been to towns where there are no parking controls and they seem to be thriving and drivers don't seem to be abusing it either.

Thanks,

I see Ladbrokes is following suit with shop closures after William Hill. It looks like the face of the High Street is set to change again.

I suppose it leaves more space for charity shops and poundland
