Microsoft is set to upset the hardware vendor world by building it's own tablet to compete with the iPad, Microsoft Surface.

"The devices have 10.6 inch (26.9cm) displays, built-in kickstands and are housed in magnesium cases - which the company described as the first of their kind...The versions using Intel's x86 technology run Windows 8 Pro and are 13.5mm (0.5 inches) thick.

The specifications mean the Surface tablets have bigger screens than the iPad but are heavier."

hmm, shall see how this is received, they've got a long way to go catch up with Apple, and my iPad doesn't crash very often

I guess it was only a matter of time before they gave it a go. I have heard from some people on other forums that they aren't all that happy with apple, so maybe this can give Microsoft the edge, but it won't be a big one, there are too many apple fans out there still. (me included )

I think Microsoft had to do something like this, Windows 8 is squarely aimed at the tablet market and to avoid a load of issue with hardware compatibility and to ensure that the devices are considered reliable and stable they have ensured that they have their own hardware, basically following the Apple model

It works for tablets because you are less likely to treat a tablet like a PC and expect to need to re-install an operating system on it, or take out the hard drive in the future and then need to re-install the OS, many of the problems from a PC will not follow across to a tablet platform. They will be more locked down and more disposable, the biggest issue will be the warranty and support, having stores gives Apple the edge, but if MS had a smart and easy system to pick up and return like a lot of the hard drive manufacturers have in place, then it would be a good option.

And to be honest Windows 7 is rock solid, I can't remember the last time it crashed or gave me any problems
