What an interesting concept.

Bloomberg Businessweek are running a competition to find the best Social Entrepreneurs/Businesses that aim to tackle social ills and turn a profit.

They have a shortlist of 25 ventures which will be shortlisted to the top 5 after inviting people to vote (before July 12th).
America's Most Promising Social Entrepreneurs 2011: For-Profits Fixing Social Ills - BusinessWeek

"Last year, the 20-employee Charlestown business got certified by B Lab, a nonprofit that promotes socially responsible business to show fellow entrepreneurs that businesses can tackle social ills. "Growing up, I thought the way you did that was go get rich and then donate your own money," says Jackson, 30. "I didn't realize there was this industry behind it."

oh yes you won't believe, all of my friends are apparently working as Social Media Managers and handling fb/twitter accounts of various clients and getting paid enormously. I must say this field is surely gaining speed.

Social Media Managers - I love it.

The way I see it, with IT that is, anyone that can defy the law of PEBKAC, can be a techy. lol

To get back to the IM thing, it looks as if people are targeting one specific aspect of internet marketing and claiming themselves to be professionals in it. Its as if these are the fields they feel most comfortable in, and feel they can excel best. Problem is its not what I would advise any newcomer to IM. To do it all, you have to learn it all.

Can you imagine trying to explain to someone that you do for a living?

That would make me an SEO expert, Forum expert, Backlinking expert, article writing expert, blog expert, (oi, not going on with that list).

Thanks,

lol it's so true. Trying to explain to my 85 year old Grandma what I do and how that makes money

....it was a lot easier when I just drove a truck for a living

lol it would, in a way, be a better idea to be a complete package. It's easier to explain. You market websites and products and services on the internet. Rather than have someone look at you strangely because they cannot understand why someone would need a twitter expert. Expert at what, tweeting? following? retweeting?

I had a worse time trying to explain my previous job. I was part of a london based recruitment company and my task was to edit jobs put through the system before they went to the site.... (no one got it lol go figure).

Thanks,
