Ok, I'm a bit rusty, so aiming this at Server guy..

currently running MS Home Server on old medium spec PC. Machine is ready for retirement, O/S is basically Win Server 2003 with different branding and some plugins for home PC's.

Does what it says on the tin, ideal for backing up personal stuff, photos etc, shares folders for me and the missus, plus holds back up of critical info from the office which is synchronised daily.

Question is, do I go with my gut and replace with a better box, maybe a low end server, but stick with home server O/S and set up, or is there a better set up... main thing is ease of use sharing and sychronising files, so may have answered my own question!!

Hi Steve
I would go for a off the shelf NAS server.
They come with an http front end so you can view your data over the wire
and most come with a back up agent that you install locally to your machine
for that extra piece of mind.

theres a thought, guessing a NAS box would be a bit pricey, but shall have a look around, cheers.

sounds like money is an issue, so why not do as you say and get a lowspec server like a HP ML110. cheap & reliable. o/s wise, sounds like your happy with 2003, or go for 2008. Home server is ****, just a bodged up mess, so stay away from that.

depends on what you really need, but maybe small business server? you then get a mail server and other stuff, maybe overkill if you just want some storage.

agree home server is a pretty messy product. Small Biz server is a bit over the top. Will look into the NAS idea, but I'm also a big fan of HP boxes, we've got 5 HP servers in the office and they've been (touch wood!) bomb proof.

Given me food for thought, thanks!

Afraid I know nothing about servers, but know that at the rate work is coming in, and supporting my other pet project it is something I will be needing in 2010

But much prefer a server that is bringing a bottle of Faustino 1995!
