Some nice person has dumped a BMW on the private carpark in front of my property.  My elderly neighbour, whose space it is occupying, has found out it's the subject of a SORN.

Obviously, Police can do nothing nor can the local Council as it's not on the road.  Local scrap company also don't want to know.  Council suggested contacting company who collects our ground rents.  Awaiting answer from them, but thought I'd ask in case anyone knows of another way we can get rid of this car (legit ones, of course!).

What a pain! Its hard work when its on private property. Councils probably right as the actual landlord is the one who needs to deal with it, if they are available.

Assume you don't know who the owner of the vehicle is.

Is the vehicle secure? If you can get into it, push it on the public road. Then, as long as it's unlocked, then the police/council will have to deal with it as it can be classed as being dangerous, ie kids can play in it.

If the vehicle is locked, I'd be tempted to use www.removemycar.co.uk and you should get about £50 for your trouble.

I don't know if you have seen this, you will get a more official and correct response.

Someone has left a car on my land, what should I do? - Ask the Police

Thanks Steve

Haven't tried the doors but red light flashing on rear view mirror suggests it's locked.

Local Police basically said same as Ask the Police.  Appears that we could move it after taking all reasonable steps to try and trace the owner.  Placing a notice on it giving 14 days for owner to reveal themselves seems a good suggestion, then we can dispose of it.  We run a small risk of someone vandalising it. This isn't a rough area but we get the occasional "keying".

Still waiting for Freeholder to be revealed.  Apparently the company collecting ground rent doesn't know who the freeholder is and has asked me to give them a couple of days to sort out what to do.  Doesn't fill me with a lot of confidence as they didn't know the difference between flats and maisonettes......

What a pain .. I would be tempted to find the tow clamp or any strong point and just drag the car off onto the road or failing that have a street push ... lol

Thanks,

This was a regular problem where I lived in the 90's. We used to just routinely and deliberately drag them out into the middle of the road, and then the police would arrange removal. It was actually a copper who suggested that we do this, although, obviously, this was an unofficial suggestion!

Hi Julia

My 10 pence worth....

Had a car dumped between me and my neighbours house...the DVLA moved it after three weeks. It was UN taxed/mot'd/insured, not sure if your said vehicle is so, you mentioned a SORN! police not interested, very polite and helpful but not their problem, speak to your city council or the DVLA, which I did every other day for the three weeks!

Most helpful guy was the chappie from the council in charge of "dept' of dumped vehicles! as previous guy said if it's unlocked (which it was) and not able to lock it from inside it's classed as a fire risk and the council send a guy out to check it and report back...also if the tax is over a month out of date it's a DVLA issue!

I went on the DVLA site and reported it and spoke to them just to make sure! alas though their reply was a bit vague, just quoted me how many cars they had to deal with and couldn't say when it might be moved!

I guess as we all know, it's speaking to the right person!....council fellow said he'd try and speak to the DVLA and assume he did, it was moved.

cheers

Thanks everyone for your advice.

Car was removed between 730 last night and 7 this morning.  Who removed it, no idea.  It's not sitting in the road.  Neighbour's theory is it was left here by someone who didn't have the funds to get it repaired; now has so came to fetch it.

Will be interesting to see what freeholder says, but won't hold my breath.  Not telling yet that it's gone......
