For those fellow cat owners amongst us, the Beeb has done some interesting research on how cats see, hunt, move, hear and smell.

I've never been a natural cat fan, and only warmed to them after inheriting one. But watching them hunt, then torment things like mice, they really do have quite a sinister mean side!

Our cat will bring us a gift, then after a quick play or maybe wounding the poor mouse, get bored and leave for us to track down!

After why eat a mouse when it's got some lovely cat food in gravy

Some interesting videos though on the beeb site:

When I first moved here we use to have a local population of frogs. We no longer do I must have found at least 40 of them over the years all dried out. Birds I've had all sorts flying around the house from Robins, Sparrows, Yellow Tits, Pigeons the only bird they wont have a go at is the Magpie I've got one that will dig for worms as for the field mice if their lucky I'll catch them before the cats do...... Not only that I've spent in the region of £4000 getting in specialists to make the garden cat proof, the cats just sat there watching and working out how to bypass the system and they decided to climb the brickwork, so we then decided to use smooth plastic and they still managed it.....

Thanks,
Barney

I think cats are just lazy now, why go out and hunt when you can stay in the warm and have everything provided. Blimey it sounds like a labour manifesto.

Mine will soon be an ex cat if it carries on ...

Last week it brought me a live mouse, she let it go & the mouse took refuge under the side unit - eventually managed to shift it to allow the cat to gain access to recapture said mouse (mouse was less than impressed !) then cat let it go again, mouse taking evasive action under the sofa - sofa moved cat jumped on it  again and was promptly deposited outside with mouse in mouth!

This morning i discovered a pile of stinking cat mess in my sons room - oh just what you want to start the morning off! Fortunately Dean wasnt with me last night.

Oh the joys of pet ownership.

Thinks about taking out a local paper ad - Black & white cat - FTGH

£4k making the garden cat proof! Be cheaper to build them their own extension

I actually watched the BBC Cat Watch on iplayer last night and it was pretty interesting. If anyone remembers, it built on the experiment done last year where they fitted collars to loads of cats and plotted where they went.

This time they are doing the same again, but comparing farm and country cats to town and inner city cats. With farm cats being nocturnal and house cats following their owners routine, although they are better suited to being nocturnal.

Didn't realise they had whiskers on the bottom of their legs, and combined with the mouth and eyelash whiskers, these are all basically parking sensors which is what makes them so agile, plus in very close range, they are pretty much blind as bats and rely on whiskers to track prey.

Mind you, like Clive, would appreciate if any prey was left outside and not set free in the lounge!

It's when they bored and leave the live mouse in the lounge and wander off upstairs and you have to spend the next 2 hours getting it outside while the cat is asleep!

One bit of information I hadn't realised is that apparently in evolutionary terms, the domesticated cat is still 50% wild; whilst the domesticated dog is 100% domesticated.

That accounts for their relative independence;even the most pampered tabby is potentially a killing machine; whereas the dog is pretty much hopeless left to its own devices, food wise.”

Eh? How many dogs are put to sleep each year for attacking people including their owner? And how many cats are put to sleep for the same reason? I know which one I feel safer with, besides if they ever bit me they'd get a size 9 where the sun doesn't shine, which one of mine can testify to..

Thanks,
Barney

So Barney, how about keeping this cat in your house?

I think this is one for Darwins theory of Natural Selection and removing some people from the gene pool

There really are some stupid people in the world. Hopefully the Lion ended up at a safari park or back in the wild!

Well I'm going to be shredded in a minute, due to the fact that I need to take one for her annual vaccinations and to do this I need to wear some gauntlets to protect myself, she absolutely hates being lifted up. Have had to do this for nearly 10 years now and it's not something i look forward to. But she's getting the full treatment today shampoo, wash and blow dry followed a needle in her back. I shall sit back and watch the vets / nurses earning their money with a grin on my face and enjoying every minute of it...

Thanks,
Barney
