This is a news story from a couple of days ago that i really didnt pay any attention to, but did you know that you are no longer required to display a tax disc from 1/10/14?

The paper tax disc is finally getting the chop due to the advances in online checks made available to the Police.

Naturally you are still required to pay vehicle excise duty, however payments can now be made online, or call an automated 24/7 phone service, or you can still do it at a Post Office, you just wont get a "disc". You can even chose monthly payments for an extra fee.

Also you can no longer buy or sell your car with tax on it. From 1/10 it will be your responsibility to Tax the car, so you won't be able to haggle with a salesman to get 6/12 months tax thrown in with the deal of buying the car. When selling your car you must remember to cancel your tax, if you dont you could face a fine of £1000 - what a con !!!

So no more sticky holders on your windscreen - thats just put a company out of business !!!

DONT do anything though until 1st October, you can be fined up until then for failure to display your disc.

So today is the day you can remove your Tax disc, if you can be bothered - bet a forum fiver you will have a wonderful sticky mess on your windscreen where the holder is welded to your windscreen though !

Reading the news earlier and something that didnt occur to me before is the amount of money HM Revenue will make from "double taxing", although the DVLA dispute how bad the problem will be and no figures were mentioned.

For example, you sell your car mid month, you have to now surrender the Tax for the remainder of the year but you only get the following and remaining whole months Tax back. Now the new owner has to Tax the car, but has to pay for the whole month that its bought in

Legalised con ! As if the motorist doesn't pay enough in Taxes already ... grrrrr

Clive

Well I never! Car tax is up this month, so no more tax disc for me

Bit of a swizzy con though about the double taxing if that's right

So I can't sell a car with 6 months tax on it? I have to claim the tax back, and the new buyer then has to tax the vehicle?

You can now pay monthly too, but better for those on a budget.

What really annoys me is the surcharge (5%) for doing this.

There are all sorts of things where companies charge you more for paying monthly, I don't do these for that purpose, otherwise I would pay monthly.   For those who don't have the option to pay the lumpsum are again being penalised (bit like electicity meters) and they are invariably the least likely to be able to afford it.

You could argue its only 5% - there are a lot of companies out there that DD interest is a lot higher, which as MRB states only penalises the ones that cant afford it.

Finally got around to removing my disc during the week and as suspected has left a horrible sticky mess behind - guess what i'm doing this weekend !

As i'm sad and have nothing better to do on my commute to work (no comments!!!) i have been looking at passing traffic - i have to say that 95% of people still are displaying a tax disc - anyone else noticed any difference ?

Clive

Not sure why they charge a mark up to pay by direct debit after all there isn't really any additional costs to run. I use Go Cardless to collect direct debits for me, they charge me 20p to collect £20.... I think I can live with that without having to pass the cost on

Thanks,
Barney
