Am I the only one who finds hiring a good website designer or web developer extremely frustrating? I have in the past found some good ones. But on the whole my experience of trying find a good, reliable, web developer has been extremely frustrating.
I have so much web work at the moment, but I am struggling to find a good developer with either the skills, or is reliable or at the right price.
I know most people are going to say it's down to money. It's not just about money. Paying loads of money doesn't mean you get the best. I have tried the usual PPH, oDesk, eLance. Most of these site are full of time wasters. I was willing to pay top tiers on those sites. But I found the guys charging the highest did not differ that much from those guys charging half the money.
I am becoming resigned to the fact that I need to start learning myself. I have enough knowledge for the standard stuff, but not for the advanced. But I think it's looking like I will need to invest the time and learn. I should not have to...

But, and a big but, there's a reason for this. The majority of people aren't willing to pay for expertise, skill, talent and knowledge. Perhaps make a list of priorities that you expect. Also, are your specifications accurate and are any milestones within the quote that you can both uphold to? Have you listed the things you get let down on to find a common denominator? Can they perhaps point to something you can learn to avoid in the future? Just in general and not aimed at you, but good customer service, reliability, helpfulness, speed of responses, added unseen value, etc, do not come cheap let alone the cost of the website design itself and all too often I see that those things are expected but not accounted for when making comparable costs on quotes.
