Posts

Both really useful posts guys, thank you. I am not sure that all business owners understand how important this is so I would imagine there will be a bit of a mad panic to catch up just before the deadline!

Good to have a source of reference for where to start.

Ha ha ha! Love this.

To not have a 'weak' password, you have to make it so complicated that you'll never remember it in a million years!!

Spray and Pray 19th January 2018 10:43 AM

'Spray and Pray' was a saying that I heard the other day and it tickled me so much that I thought I've just got to share it with you all.

If you are familiar with the world of Recruitment then you may already know about the 'Spray and Pray' practice and have indeed cursed it's very conception. 'Spray and Pray'  is adopted by people looking for a new job on Monster/Indeed/Jobsite, and send their CV to EVERY SINGLE job advert they find that vaguely represents the job they want. They have obviously adopted the theory that if they apply for 100 jobs then surely they will get one interview, right?

What they don't realise is the pain that causes the recruiter or employer, having to sift through hundreds of CVs that are sent by people who have not even properly read the job description, salary offering, location or quite frankly anything at all about the role. This has become all too apparent to me recently as I have undertaken a project for a Recruiter helping to screen the plethora of CVs that land on his desk every day, and already I am tearing my  hair out. And here's an example of why:

Job advertised: Operations Project Manager for a Music Studio chain
Applicant's job experience: IT Manager

Salary advertised: £40-45k
Applicant's salary expectation: £65-80k

Job location: Bristol
Applicant's location: Aberdeen
Willing to relocate? NO

Why do you think this job is right for you?
Answer: I would really like to advance my career in the Sport's Science field.

At this point I referred them back to the actual title of the role (which really could not have been clearer) and threw their CV into the 'not in a million years' pile. Multiply this scenario by one hundred times a day and I ask myself; who would be a recruiter??! Maybe that is why recruiters come up with amusing little sayings like 'Spray and Pray' to get them through the day!

Google Data - How shoppers find ideas 10th January 2018 11:55 AM

Hi Steve

It's as though Google knows me personally!!

This data is so true of me - I start EVERYTHING with a list, and have found it useful in the past to Google other people's lists to make sure I haven't forgotten anything. For example, we are planning my Step-daughter's wedding at the moment and she Googled 'Bride's wedding planning list' to not only check that we hadn't missed anything but to also get additional ideas.

Yet another useful tool that people can use for the overall SEO of their website. I would suggest following Think with Google as they provide all sorts of data that can be useful to businesses as a whole FOR FREE! Their Twitter feed is jam-packed with info and useful nuggets.

A great find Steve.

Who's hit the ground running? 10th January 2018 9:21 AM

Hi Rebecca

I am always so surprised at how quickly I get back into a routine after a break! I always start with plans to take on less work, spend more time with my family etc etc,but then before you know it I am back to my old ways. I can't complain though as I would rather be busy than twiddling my thumbs.

So to sum up, I agree that it is going to be a busy and successful year for all of us!

Web Browsers 6th December 2017 11:53 AM

I use Chrome, but my laptop recently flashed up a message saying that if I switched to Edge I would save battery life. Now how exactly does that work?!

Are things built to last? 5th December 2017 12:00 PM
We had a hotpoint washing machine that just wouldn't die. It had to be 20 years old and used daily. In the end we replaced it with a modern Bosch as we thought it was only a matter of time as it was making dodgy noises.

But now the Bosch after about 3 years of use is on the way out  I've also heard things are now engineered to fail which is a sad reflection on progress in the ever more weird world we live in...”

Let that be a lesson to you Steve

I But after relaunching it three times, I've got no sales. I'm not really sure what's wrong with it.”

Have you done a focus group or a review process to find out the answer to this? If you don't know what is wrong with it then you can't change it to make it more desirable.

What is your product? Can you give some people a free trial and get their feedback? It might be something simple that needs tweaking or (hopefully not, but) a case of cutting your losses if it is really not working.

I am sure people on this forum would be happy to help test and evaluate.

Are you ready for 2018? 30th November 2017 10:08 AM
That's a great way to look at it Natalie! And since I started to work towards my 'why' I've earned a lot more! ”

That's fantastic news Rebecca!
