With a tweak of CSS, hows that?

We greyed it originally thinking people would be drawn to it and click accidentally.

See, an interactive forum, just don't ask for anything too complicated

I have little understanding of any of that...but surely it's a tortoise not a turtle?

lol Trust you, turtle sounded better

Your not doing much to cheer me up Andy

It's sad when you have to watch someone going through the motions and just wanting it all to end. But guess that's another topic!

Blimey!

If the manufacturer has taken full responsibility, then I assume it's just a paper work exercise to keep everyone happy? You wouldn't expect boilers in this day and age to explode like that

You really were lucky/unlucky, but could have been so much worse!

Its a tough one. I've never really got on with any appraisal system. The one in the military was awful, seemed unfair, but maybe it wasn't? It meant not getting promoted in 12 years, something to do with attitude and questioning authority?

The corporate world seemed fairer, but maybe because I seemed to make up for lost time as free thought and good ideas are rewarded in civvy street  But there were massive discrepancies and injustices, which directly affect people, and how much of the annual bonus comes their way.

Ironically, one of the fairest I found was during my short stint at Accenture. As a line manager it was tedious as it was continual monthly 1-1's with employees which seemed over the top, and was a pig to manage. But it was fairer for team members, with an ongoing report of progress, including score, rather than a single highlight that a manager remembered and then graded on.

Enter the small company world and it gets harder. Promotion and prospects tend to be more limited, so opportunities are scarce. Not many small businesses I know have a HR department, internal or outsourced

But for a small team, rewards can be more instant, such as a trip to the pub, or share in profits if things are going well, rather than a formal appraisal.

Or just give yourself a virtual back slap

Reminds me, thinking back to days in the Airforce. We used to have a system called a "good show award". eg you stopped a transit van from rolling into a cargo plane, or thought of some wonderful new way to do something more efficiently. If awarded, you would have your name in lights in the base newsletter, and that was it. Not even a marks and sparks voucher

Maybe we should adopt a more American attitude and group hug and yeehaa when someone does something well.

Trouble is with surveys, people tend to get bombarded with them, so response rate tends to be low. To get people to fill them in you have to keep them short, which reduces the amount of useful info you can collect, as it starts to turn more into a poll.

Harvesting information from the internet is a dangerous strategy and I would advise against, but any business that has their email in the clear is open to abuse, so it's a fine line. You could Google local businesses, and give them a bell or fill in their contact forms.

General trader communities such as forums as suggested by mrb is a good one.

Maybe look to social media. For building type contractors, Facebook groups is a useful and free way to make contacts or ask questions. For more IT type contractors, Google plus communities can be a good place to hunt.

LinkedIn is also still a powerful community, not sure about construction type trades, but lots of IT type communities. SEO freelancers or web-designers still need to keep accounts.

If you have a budget, maybe a targeted facebook campaign, aimed at your exact ideal audience.

Become active in local networking communities and be known as the go to bookkeeper

Hope that helps.

It's when celebs you grew up with on the telly like Cilla die, that you start to feel old

72 is no age these days, and according to the media, there was no reported illness or explanation other than natural causes.

It seems most famous people from the 70's are either dead or in Prison

On that happy note....
