lol heard this on the Radio on the way home.

We used to rank really well for My Local, from a completely untargeted traffic point of view Just checked and we're currently on page 3

May have to have a forum whip round to mount the legal challenge, maybe time for a little SEO campaign instead

Interesting move by Morrisons, they seem to be struggling, which is worrying as they are my favourite supermarket

Well, I only managed 3 tracks, then I was home. How long are those tracks? 13 minutes and 18 minutes, that was nearly 2 sides of an album in my day. Sounding good though, they haven't lost their unique style.

Am very impressed, still plenty of life left in them, and thankfully no problems with Bruce's voice!

Not convinced by that article, but emotional imagery sells papers and advertising.

As a species, we're not very nice. We don't seem to have evolved very far from the genocide of the 1930's and 40's, Cambodia, Rwanda, Yugoslavia, Iraq, Sierra Leone, Afghanistan, Syria, Ukraine to name a few.

As the global population increases, poverty and lack of education feed extremism of all flavours, can you ever imagine a time when the world is at peace? I just hope my kids don't end up living in a Mad Max style world

No wonder we don't hear about UFO's landing anymore, there's probably a big diversion sign at the edge of the galaxy saying stay away, dangerous nutters ahead!

Most people making all the noise publicly on social media or news channels are armchair critics. The ones that are actually doing something about it and trying to help are too busy to care.

I'm thinking we might start sending a couple of posh tea bags and some biscuits to first time customers with a sort of "have a drink on us" theme, maybe playing on the whole relax and put your feet up in your freshly cleaned home angle?”

Superb idea Luke. If you do try it, be very interested to hear how you got on, and whether you think it was worth it ROI wise.

Keep meaning to chase up Nimbus, shall have to drop their boss man a line and see if we can get some stats they would like to share.

Just about to post this on Facebook and looking for a suitable image, when accidentally came across these two blasts from the past.

The original pages for both Facebook and Google. Albeit rough and ready when they were at the start up stage, the home pages have pretty much stayed to the non pretty formula, even though they have the budget to be stunning.

Versus Bing and it's current background imagery and distraction.

Food for thought?

"pretty" website can also inspire trust in your customers especially if you are taking payment online, I'd definitely feel more comfortable putting my card details into a well designed website then I would a DIY freesite.

Agree completely, but I think the point our man Seth was getting at, was not so much DIY versus professional site, I think few people would argue against that. It was more simple rough and ready in your face conversion/money making machine, versus aesthetically pleasing. Or pretty pictures painting a story, versus text saying we do this, buy it here.

I really like your site, visually it looks the business. But you consciously sacrifice 50% of your visual above the fold real estate with a purple image, when viewed on a desk top, forcing a user to scroll.

The curse of responsive design or deliberate from user testing.

Applying the Seth approach, and stripping out the pretty bit, you would be left with this above the fold:

Question is, does one way work better than the other? I guess that's the crux of the argument. But that's one for analytics, conversion data and split testing.

In the old days we used to be paranoid about making the visitor making more than 2 clicks to get to a call to action. With mobile now ruling(ish) the roost, maybe scrolling has taken over from clicks?

I'm sat at a responsive cross roads as we toy with possible new designs for MLS. I want sleek sexy and pretty, where as the current separate mobile site and old school fixed template desktop works well and is commercially safe. Get it wrong and it gets expensive

Hi Barney

Just read your post mate, and I've suspended it for no other reason than I know you are letting off steam, it's very personal, and I don't want it to impact your business by having it public in case you regretted it. Like wise I can make it public again, or delete it, just let me know.

You said you are ignoring emails and phone-calls, so I'm hoping you are using the forum as an outlet and you read this.

You have had a string of bad luck that would be unbelievable in a Hollywood film, so it's no wonder you feel at rock bottom. Knowing nothing about your industry, I can only imagine the shock and trauma it must have caused, and an understandable loss of confidence.

You may remember a few years ago I mentioned to someone else when I hit the bottom and disappeared into a bottle. At the time I became insular, lost interest in everything apart from booze. My situation was grief, but I imagine the emotions aren't that dissimilar. Like you I had well meaning suggestions of help, and I suspect like you, ex Squaddie pride kept me from talking to a "tree hugger or do gooder" types. But it's a blinkered approach, and counselling can and does help countless people. You never know, give it a try, I didn't, but think I should have.

My fix was to jack in work and disappear for a few months down under. It worked for me, managed to get an emotional reboot and a fresh perspective on the world, something that seemed impossible only months before.

Yours may be to take a break, talk with someone, go and work with a cat sanctuary for a bit, or perform your own technical post mortem on what happened and comprehend exactly what happened, without any other day to day business pressures. But do something.

It's a shit cliche, but true, take one day at a time, and don't make any rash decisions. Feel free to rant, rah or sound off, either publicly or send me an email. But don't forget to feed the cats!

What Are You Listening To Now? 8th September 2015 10:31 PM
Absolute silence - Steve is away .....

Ahh the silence rings in my ears - no sighing as he is typing, no chewing his gum and no tapping his mug when he wants a coffee... ok made the last one up
