Just reading this article on the BBC news - what a load of rubbish!

BBC news - Calling teachers Sir and Miss 'depressing and sexist'

Seems we have an feminist doing her worst, stating that calling a male teacher "sir" is fine but a female teacher "miss" isnt, because and wait for it .... its not on the same level as a knight, presume she wants them to be addressed as Dames?

Have to be honest, never really gave it a thought when i was a kid, just was told to call the teachers sir or miss, well to their faces anyway - i never looked at it from a degrading point of view, and i certainly dont think its sexist.

I was always taught to say please and thank you, sir and miss. Disrespecting a teacher or elders (including the lollipop man) was a massive taboo when I was a kid. Thinking about it, that type of behaviour was always viewed more seriously than petty fights with other kids or even rowdy behaviour.

Where has the respect gone?

Thanks,

Have things changed or do we just sound like our parents? Discipline or techniques may have changed, lingo, slang and fashions change, but are kids in general any less respectful than they were 20, 30 or 40 years ago?

I'm a firm believer in the benefit culture has a lot to answer for, which is finally getting addressed (only out of necessity), and we are too PC as a society. But I think there has been a lot of good over the years, and I suspect there are more opportunities, and the quality of education is prob higher than it was 40 years ago.

Removing the modern hoodie stereotypes, there have always been gangs of feral kids, and plenty of disrespect. From Mods, Punks, chavs, scrubbers, pick a label depending on which generation you come from. Then we have had a continual stream of youths over the last 10 years fighting for their country showing that they deserve our respect.

But I do think there is an underlying fear of the PC modern culture, and kids should get a clip round the ear from a copper, or a kick up the arse from a teacher
