BA to sell M&S Sandwiches

BA has signed deal to sell M&S sandwiches to economy passengers from January 2017.  This applies to short-haul flights only and replaces the free "meal" currently provided.  BA customers have reported a downturn in quality/quantity of late and the apparent introduction of low cost airline practices.

Waitrose apparently declined.  Various questions have been asked about claiming Sparks points on purchases and whether the refund policy applies.   As one cynic put it, the slogan of "To Fly To Serve" should now be changed to "To Fly To Starve".

Not that I fly BA these days (they don't serve Birmingham) but I'll stick with Boots Meal Deal or something made to order in the departure lounge.

I remember in the good old days flying to various places with my folks. Part of the "fun" was the inflight meal, which sadly i used to enjoy as a child.

Seems strange these days taking your own food on board, or buying a pathetic excuse for a bacon buttie....

Be interesting to see how this deal with M&S takes off ( oh come on it was there for the taking !) and if any of the other providers follow suit.

Thought I'd let you have your moment Clive

I'm sad I know but I still enjoy most of the airline meals.  Sadly the best free ones I've ever had were on airlines that no longer exist.  Virgin Atlantic lunch wasn't bad last year, but breakfast was dire.  Monarch was fine for £8 each way; couldn't finish it which is unusual for me.

What I objected to with Thomson was introduction of chips.  Their marketing people claimed they were responding to customer requests; well they didn't ask me!  Don't mind them using fuel made from old chip oil.  I usuall buy a Boots meal deal, but most airports have outlets that will make fresh sandwiches or a salad box to take on board.

Other airlines already using Buy on Board (BoB) are Iberia and Swiss.  A cynic has already asked if the generous M&S refund policy will apply, whether you can collect Sparks and how long will it be before Dine in for £10 is introduced in Club and First......

I like the thought of the £10 meal deal. If they do the M&S Prosecco as well I'm sold!

Thanks

I flew with Thomsons in June, bought a sarnie to take onboard from Boots in BHX, but options where limited coming home so opted (stupidly) for a bacon buttie.

The 2 rashers of bacon were all but none existent (thinner than a piece of paper) and the ciabatta was so over toasted it crumbled.

Bring back in flight meals as standard!!!!

I'm off to start a petition

Now back in the day, when I was a spotty youth based at RAF Lyneham as a transport driver, one of our multitude of jobs was to drive the inflight catering wagons. I used to love it, because you would spend the shift working in the inflight kitchen. On night shifts it was normally quiet, and to keep boredom at bay, you'd normally help the cooks out preparing and packaging the grub.

As a thank you, they used to let you help yourself out of the huge walk in fridges, and you could tuck into whatever you fancied. So I used to go for the Officer and VIP meals and feast on shark steaks, lobster and and loads of other things I'd never had before, plus you could eat your own body weight in rubbish and chocolate. The inflight cooks were also masters of dry ice bombs, but that's another story

It was a good lesson in life, always keep the chef sweet, and they'll look after you

Clive - count me in with the petition!  Did some market research with Thomson in 2014 for their new branding.  Unfortunately when asked about their food offerings I was in the minority.  The fast food culture has taken over.  Don't mind paying for a meal if it's a reasonable quality.  Have heard that about their bacon butties before now....

Steve - sounds great experience.  So the Indulgence name (civilians taking military flights) was correct then.  My friend who was based at Halton, Brampton and Benson, with a tour in Sicily thrown in, would be miffed so I'm not telling
