Article directories, blogs, forums, directories, twitter, facebook are all good ways to promote for free.

Paying money isn't something to be scared of - a paid listing in a good directory can help a lot
You can ignor PR provided the page you are interested in is in the Google index it will help.

In my experience the PR of the page or site doesn't seem to make much if any difference. The numbers of links and referring domain names does.

The key consideration are whether the pages is related to your topic and how many outgoing links it has already.

More content = more chances of visitors finding phrases which match their search.

Sounds like you need to collect some links from respectable websites with your keywords in the links (called anchor text)

There are plenty of directories etc that will do the trick try searching for "Yahoo Directory" as a start.
Well write good unique stuff and visitors will come - or so Google would have you believe
Backlink is Reduced 20th July 2011 2:42 PM
I agree Yahoo has more data than Google.

Google tends to just show samples of data as with their link: command.
Well I use wordpress on a few blogs - and posts are indexed within a few minutes not 24 hours.

Its because wordpress has a ping service that calls google to come and index each page. The blogs are not particularly strong or good - see the one for example in my navigation from the link signature.

I think its pretty easy to add a ping service even if you don't have a blog - ask your webdesign.

I would say that getting content indexed quicker doesn't mean better rankings it just means the Search Engines are aware of the page sooner.

Facebook will crush Google, I expect them to stay in 2nd place though and to fight hard to stop Facebook.
How about the number of sales or enquiries you get?

For me I would rather have 10 enquiries from 100 visitors than 9 from 100,000.
In my experience directories are useful for collecting backlinks but you get very few if any leads from them. A local directory whilst bringing more focussed leads is likely to have a lot less traffic so even less chance of bringing attention.
