Moving to HTTPS - great case study 13th April 2016 3:18 PM

Just to show we're not biased and all's fair in directory land. Here is an excellent post from Yells head of Web Engineering, Steve Workman.

HTTPS is the secure version of your normal www web pages, and can be seen in your browser as a padlock. eg:

Yell spent 7 months transitioning to HTTPS, which coincidently turns out to be around the same as we did.

This would have proved to be a good guide, so if anyone is considering the ins and outs of migrating their web site, big or small, then this article is a good place to start.

HTTPS is Hard - Yell Blog

Shameless propaganda at the tax payers expense, or useful information that will help you make your mind up?

I assume we will be getting a Brexit one at some point, no doubt sexier and more controversial, but the battle lines have been drawn

Business awards scam - fake flattery 13th April 2016 8:44 AM

It's 2016 and this years awards for the most gullible are in!

Yep it's that time of year for *********** (name removed because they got upset and complained to Google) to pump out lots of self flattery award spam for the gullible and impressionable, for a fee, obviously.

This year I'm MD of the year, which to be honest is probably true, but I'll still settle for a nice Tankard than pay £1400 for the elite package and a trophy

My favourite line is:

"following months of research by our in-house awards team you have won MD of the Year"

This rubbish has been going for so long, that it must be a pretty effective business model to be sustainable. How do intelligent business people fall for this tosh

If you need your ego massaged, send me £10 and I'll happily send anyone a certificate with anything you want printed on it... You can then put it on your wall and admire it

Maybe I'll team up with Andy from Pewter World and we'll knock out some tankards. The cut price dodgy MLS awards have been born, everyone's a winner

Hi Ave, I split your last post and started a new thread as it's a new topic, just in case you were wondering

Ref the closed threads, you are very welcome to add your 5 pence worth to any web site reviews. By default, we auto lock any thread that hasn't had any comments after 6 months. It's a signal to Google that we actively moderate the forum, as well as stopping johnny spammers bumping ancient threads.

Website Reviews - any threads that don't display a padlock symbol are open.

Back to the question in hand, blog posting.

I hope this is legal and I don't see anything wrong with it as we bloggers guest blog each other anyway to get more views...”

Legal wise is a great point, assuming we are talking about the internet God - Google

Back in Jan 2014 Google decided it had had enough of bloggers abusing the system by generating backlinks by doing guest blogs. I did a post about it at the time - Guest Blogging is dead

My track record back then was as an atrocious and lazy blogger, and in the end switched my blog off.

Fast forward to the end of 2015, and blogs seem to be back in vogue, and under recommendation we built a new blog, but with strict criteria and it is all about quality, now low quality link dumping as in the bad old days.

So guest blogging isn't as dead as it was made out, but it is all about adding value and relevant quality content. As a marketing and business blog, Google might frown if we have a guest blog about the merits of dishwasher tablets written by the Dish Washer tablet shop.

So any posts are business and marketing relevant, proof read, and are aimed at being useful to encourage engagement, ie sharing, comments, conversations or links back to the site.

An example of one of our best articles is a Work Place Pension piece that has had a lot of shares. The one area we are struggling though and need to work on is actual interaction, ie comments on the blogs.

If you have a passion for writing, then the internet is the right place for you as it's all about quality content creation. We use Rebecca (PayforPrecision) to keep our content on the proof reading straight and narrow.

If you wanted to offer content creation or copy services to members, then maybe get some more stuff on your own blog, so you can point members to your work. Maybe have a look at some of your content and add a few paragraphs, so your content becomes easier to read.

I really struggle with generating blog content so always looking for inspiration, but feel free to add any comments to ours!

I'd becareful about doing a lot of guest blogging, and even more careful what sites you are adding your name to, but done properly, there is still a market for guest blogging.

Forum wise, add as much content as you want

StumbleUpon - traffic generator? 12th April 2016 1:20 PM

Hi Ave, I've renamed your thread as it's primarily about Stumbleupon and could be really useful to future visitors, I also moved your last post over to this thread.

Interesting numbers, so it's obviously working for you.

Is viewed number correct? 12th April 2016 12:53 PM

Update on this.

We've managed to block the bot that was doing the scraping. Looks like it got itself stuck in a loop on a number of pages, one of which was yours.

The page view counter has been reset to exclude this scraper bot and now shows a genuine figure of 514 page views.

Mystery solved and thanks for flagging it

That's It... 12th April 2016 12:43 PM

Bloody animals! We lost our 3 cats within 12 months of each other from age related illnesses and one with cancer. All 3 had to be put down and I blub'd like a baby

Kids keep asking for either a cat, rabbit or a dog, so suggesting fish as better alternative. You can't get emotionally attached to a fish surely?

Have also suggested a robot pet which I like the sound of, no hassle when it comes to holidays, and no vets bills

Hmm we've done some checking and it's a bot that is doing some heavy duty scraping. Unfortunately they are alternating a wide range of IP's so are getting past our usual filters  For some reason it got hung up on your page

The correct number of page views on your page according to our analytics is 449.

Looking at our tax office thread, it shows publicly as 159,644 page views and our analytics shows 134,286 page views, so not too far off, and the page view counter in the past has been pretty accurate.

Why your page is being targeted I have no idea, but we will continue to investigate.

Yahoo and the Daily Fail 11th April 2016 3:34 PM

Well there's a bizarre marriage, according to the beeb the Daily Mail is considering a bid for former internet giant Yahoo. How the mighty have tumbled!

To be fair the Daily Mail is an online success story, content rich with all the ingredients to keep it's pages sticky, and has huge loyal following.

I'm not sure what it would gain from buying a search engine unless it has it's sites set on Google?

Early days, but certainly one to watch.
