Web development is always going to be there, but with the way things are evolving, spammers, scammers etc. need to be stopped IMHO.

To be completely honest and hate/dislike if you must, I think that there is a definite drift in what people believe SEO and IM to be. Some say that IM is a part of SEO, some say that the two are exactly the same. So this shows me that people are being led astray by people that offer quick fixes and give completely wrong explanations of what IM and SEO really is. This all chain reacts until you get the situation where even facebook is under fire from spammers.

As soon as someone mentions how good one technique works, its already rendered useless because spammers have already found and exploited the technique, which means that it will be useless for you to even try to use.
I think, maybe there needs to be some sort of spam/scam proof SEO technique developed. So that IM's can once again be proud of who they are and the companies they represent without having to deal with the ranks that intend to do nothing but take advantage for their own gain.

The job of an SEO is to ensure that website owners put their best face forward and present themselves in the best possible light. Since people will always need this type of service, SEO will always be in demand."[/url]

Exactly. Marketing is an entirely different ball game, but that doesn't make optimizing a site any less important. Thing is, I have seen many think that SEO is the be all and end all of marketing, and chase SERP ranks rather than trying to get their product out there to the general masses.

Do you think it would be better if people didn't chase Google ranks? I mean, just optimize a site, and then market a product, and let the search engines come to you?

LOL you need a warning sign for us poor innocents that stumble into the thread unaware :P
I'm glad it all worked out for you. I have two desks in my room. One for my laptop and one for my desktop. Not sure I'll be making space anytime soon.
Wiping data on junked computers 6th November 2011 1:00 PM
I'm not entirely sure about software that can format a hard drive. The best thing to do is format it like I mentioned before. That way, if it reboots afterwards and tells you to insert a disc or press any key to continue, you could be pretty sure its all gone.

OR.

A slightly more technical way is to take the hard drive, have a look at the pins at the top, near the plugs and IDE cable. These pins have a certain arrangement, with a small (really tiny) plastic sleeve that fits over one or two pins at a time that gives you different functions of the hard drive. If it is set as a primary master, it will be the hard drive the system boots off of, but you can set it to a slave (most hard drives have the settings mapped out in an image on it somewhere), plug it into another computer, and hey presto you will have another hard drive connected to a computer that you can navigate and delete files as your heart desires.

IMHO the second option seems to be the best, or both. PC's can be finicky at the worst times, but those are the best ways to do it without relying on software (which I don't really trust either).
THANKS Steve and Dreamraven

Will try Dreamraven's approach first, then junk my PC if it fails to take its last chance!

Am very grateful to you both. Thanks again, Linda

You're welcome. Good luck, I hope it all works out.

It could be hard drive failure, but with all the system 32 errors you're picking up, its more than likely that windows is up to no good.

There is a way to format the hard drive and then reinstall windows without having to boot windows at all.

You need to go to your BIOS, have a look where it details your boot sequence. Change it so that it boots from a cd, you can then restart the PC with the windows disc in the CD/DVD drive, and it should install or even repair from there. (if you could have accessed safe mode, you could have done a system restore, which could have taken you back to before norton was installed as well.)

Ok back to the process. Sometimes it takes a bit of hit and miss, because it is sometimes set to load the hard drive if there is nothing detectable in the CD/DVD drive. You could disable that, or load the disc as soon as the PC starts POST. If it works well, you will get a message saying press any key to continue, and it should give you the option to repair or re install windows. To remove everything off the drive, it will ask if you would like to format the drive before installing, and ask you which format you would like to use. for XP, I recommend NTFS. It's also not always a good idea to use quick format. I have found instances when I have used it, only to find that some files aren't really deleted.

After the format, the install should start as normal. It will reboot after formatting, and load again from the cd/dvd. It will load the same way it did when you started, but if you leave it, and not press anything it should take you to the install screen and take things from there. (I learnt the hard way. lol I love pushing buttons )

With hard drive failure, you usually get a "NTLDR is missing press any key to continue" message, which means that either the HD isn't plugged in properly or the disk has coughed its last wheeze. To fix that, you can just go to a PC store, get another HD and reinstall windows the way I mentioned above, using the same technique.

I hope it all works out and that you can get the PC running again.

Good luck
Why would you lie? 1st November 2011 12:37 PM
Well it depends. Some individuals don't think they are lying unless it is of a certain magnitude. A 'white' lie almost not a lie at all to them at all. Then you have deceit which can be as bad as lying. Some people just like to lie or try to bend things to their will using methods that are not the most honest and consider it fine because somehow its justified in their mind.

That's always fascinated me though. If you know its wrong, why bother. I just could never get my mind around that.
Fake online reviews 31st October 2011 7:36 PM
It's an interesting one. We recently rebuilt our review system, because to be honest it was rubbish We didn't allow negative feedback because when we did it was abused, and the positive was obvious self promo stuff.

So I spent a long time looking at other review sites, trying to find all the best ones, and went to speak to the guy that took on Trip Adviser and forced them to readdress their review system.

As a result, I think we made ours on My Local Services as fair as humanely possible, but the quality of review sites out there is amazing, and I say the majority we looked at were floored, with blatant unmoderated self promo, or legally worrying slander and abuse.

Paying someone to do fake reviews is no great surprise, but I suspect these will be pretty simple to spot, and no doubt a lot will be poor English

How you get a search engine to filter against bad reviews though is going to be a tough one, as Google is actively encouraging review based content as we move into a brave new social search world.

I actually enjoy doing reviews, especially design reviews. You get good and bad reviews, it depends on the person asking for the review and the person giving it I guess.

No don't think they can completely stop these things. Think if you've looked at online reviews and use a number of site long enough that you become pretty capable of spotting fake glowing reviews.

You would be amazed. Everytime there is a new algo, someone's already working on a way around it. I really don't think its going to end anytime soon. People are just going to get a lot more "creative".
Why would you lie? 31st October 2011 7:30 PM
lol naah it's ok. I guess in a way it can be said/asked of any situation. I've noticed that when someone lies about business, its mainly pride, because they don't want you to see them "weak" or see that the business isn't doing as well.

I wouldn't say human nature. It's pretty easy to stick with the truth, but there are days....
I have had really bad days before where I was tempted to bend the truth, just to lessen a little stress, but in the end, its true what they say. It all builds and in the end it all comes out. Best not to be around when it does
