I just got a call from a company trying to pitch their directory, I automatically did a few searches, checked the long tail he was talking about, done a keyword check (how many a month etc) and proceeded to shut this guy down.

He was extremely polite, and wanted to know how I knew all this (standard knowledge to all of us) so I explained, this went on for a few minutes, and I can honestly say, this is the best call I have ever received, there was no phone down when the caller realised I knew more than he did, no cheek, no sarcasm, no script reading etc, just a genuine thirst for knowledge.

I believe **** rolls downhill, so to have a good team they have to have a good manager, director, chairman etc, so if anyone ever gets a call from Our local tradesmen provide fast, FREE quotes on localtraders.com do not be too quick to shut them down, I have to say, I was very impressed with this chap.

Remember that telesales is like a billboard, you do not need 99% of what is being pitched, but every so often, you might just need what they are pitching, I for one need to be nicer to these people just paying the bills like the rest of us.

Sounds like our Kip is going soft, even gave them a free back link

It's a shame they are still following the old format though of buying in data and cold calling to generate sign ups

Nice they don't go down the road of the obnoxious and sarcastic telesales team that the usual suspects use....

Credit where it is due, I have setup a call centre, and gone in and trouble shot another, both were very successful, but very hard to achieve, telesales is a hard job, make no mistake.

We automatically shut them down because they are generally a pain in the rear, but it is our own experiences that we force onto others, was not this chaps fault I was a sceptic, but the fools before him!

....still turned into a softy!

If somebody makes a sales call to me, so long as they are reasonable and get to the point I am happy to listen. Usually not for long as nearly always there is a reason why what they are offering is not relevant to me and my business.
Plus, sometimes the telesales person can be a scripted (and irritating) interuption.
However, the odd time, you can get a straightforward, knowledgeable person actually trying to sell you something that could be of interest! Worth allowing 30 seconds or so I always think to see........just in case.......

I have bought off telesales people, as long as I have a need and they've taken the right approach.

Some good telesales staff out there, trouble is they are eclipsed by the unreputable companies.

thinking dodgy charity and police mags, aggressive biz directory market leaders...

Just never agree to a sale from a cold call, take 5 and check 'em out first...

It is so easy to check companies out nowadays. I do it while they are on the phone. We do small amount of telesales from time to time. I find people are much less receptive to it now compared to 5 years ago. People are less polite and rude, which never used to be a case in the b2b market. I suppose on one level a lot of agressive sales tactics from bad companies have not helped.

Because we are a service business, we are only after long term relationships, so whatever we say, we must deliver so there is no way we can promise miracles on anything. It's not like selling a TV and not seeing the customer for another 5 years.

I must confess to having done a stint at telesales myself whilst at Uni - it was really tough going I stuck it for about 10-12 weeks then was glad to be back at college.

I always have a bit of guilt saying no when they call - but as others have said 99% is not needed.

Telesales have been widely spreaded all over the world. People are annoyed about this and always hang up the phone when they realize that you are trying to sell some stuff to them. We gotta think it over how to make telemarketing works well and efficiently. It is that easy to do this.
