Without stating the obvious do your research before choosing. There are a lot of cowboys out there

Make sure you've decided on what your realistic goals are and what you hope to achieve.

Remember that SEO is not a quick short term fix. It is something that does take time and is an ongoing process. It will still require investment of your time and I would advise that you do not want somebody who is going to come in and suggest lots of changes and disappear again - as that will only achieve a short term gain (if your lucky). SEO is best tweaked over time to achieve good results.

Be wary of anybody claiming to get you a No.1 spot on the first page of Google.

Finally, make sure it is clear what you want from them and what they will provide?

Remember reports (which you should receive) need not be long (as you don't need waffle) but they do need to be meaningful. Also, make sure they are personalized to you and your needs.

I agree with Mike, you will have people offering seo for peanuts which is one of the reasons I don't really offer it as a service any more.

If you believe there is a genuine business opportunity for your product you should think about paying for someone like Mike who offers it as a service, I often say to people if I had a business that required some legal work done for it I would not train myself up as a lawyer so that I could do the legal side of things.

Ask Mike for an informal proposal and some ideas I am sure he can you get you going in the right direction and as he said this is not an overnight thing.
