People with profound and complex needs CAN make music
The Improvise Approach enables people with profound and complex needs to play an iPad musical instrument on their own, in their own way and at their own speed, making use of their particular physical and cognitive skills and strengths. (The Improvise Approach ebook is free in the U.K. from the iBookstore.)

After years of research and teaching music young people with severe, profound and complex needs, I created this music system, based on my experience, that carers, parents and teaching staff can use to empower their player(s) with real music-making skills. I run training workshops on setting up and using the ThumbJam and AUMI apps so that people with even the most restricted movement can play along solo and as a group and be totally in tune with each other and the music backing tracks (included in the ebook). These music tracks landscape the music session so band members can improvise freely on their iPad instrument and be in tune with everything they hear. No pressure is ever placed upon players to perform in a particular way. Every sound that a player makes on their iPad instrument is always harmonious, in tune and sounds very good!
- It’s a student-led experience.

- It’s free in the U.K. from www.improviseapproach.com. I write articles, give talks, runs workshops for school children, parents, teaching staff and at conferences.

The Improvise Approach utilises the amazing Thumbjam app as a musical instrument that is both exciting and accessible. The music session is easy to set up and run with step-by-step guidance. The approach appeals to a wide age and ability range and has been trialled for over 5 years in diverse special needs settings. The downloadable book (iBook Store) shows you everything you need to enable solo and group performances. Whichever notes you touch, you are in tune with the 10 backing tracks. The slightest touch or movement on the iPad is all that's needed to join in and make musical sounds (with your fingers, nose, chin, toes!) It also shows you how to incorporate percussion instruments too.
