Yeah !! we went No1. this morning 9th December 2010 12:16 PM
Well done Centurion, I must get some reviews sorted as well. I need about another 859 (or something silly like that) reviews to rank No. 1 for 'web design'

Steve, also PM me your MLF link as you want it to appear, and I will add it to our free business directories page which is a PR3

But I rank high for Doncaster so that will do for now.
I find its only the non-genuine type that ignore TPS/CTPS.

Keep getting scam calls from the 'meter registration department' saying our premises are still on an 'emergency tarriff' since we moved here back in July.

I keep telling them the landlord pays the bill for the whole (quite big) building and our rent is inclusive of utilities.

On Googling them, I find they are a scam company (this one in Manchester) ringing round with the same scam, hoping people sign up to their electricity tarrif. The first call sounded almost plausible as it was literally a few weeks after we moved in. Not sure how they get that info as they never called me before then. Have since had 4-5 calls and the last one a couple of weeks ago got a short, sharp shock threatening to report her to the police for fraud and harrassment and I hung up on her. She hasn't rang me back yet.

On the second or third call when I had wised up to who they were, I asked them for a number for our accountant to call them back as "they deal with all that stuff" I told them. He said he was ringing from a mobile but would give me a 0845 number. Oddly enough when I rang it later, it was a number not in use.
Don't forget to TPS your number to cut down on most cold calls for home and business.

Google 'tps online'

Those that ignore it and still ring get told we are TPS'd and most of those then get the hint and apologise, but some dont even know what it is and I tell them they can be fined for not cleansing their data for TPS'd numbers. Most are quick to get off the line...

Same for MPS with junk mail. Just write MPS on the envelope and put it back into the post box and let Royal Mail deal with it.
What is Gray Hat SEO? 7th December 2010 1:26 PM
I have found this posted on: What are your definitions of white hat, gray hat and black hat SEO?

Everything that is not allowed by Google is Black Hat SEO

Everything that is allowed by Google, but frowned upon, or is not allowed by Google, but is done in such a way that it is hard for them to penalize you for it, is Grey Hat SEO

Everything that is done according to the Google Guidelines is White Hat SEO

Don't be silly!

Everyone knows it's when your doing some SEO on your website and you wear a grey hat instead of your black hat or your white hat (maybe they are in the wash or something).

Gawd, I thought everyone knew that!
Basically its the same thing. You optimise your website with keywords, then when that's done, you build links using those keywords, to link from other relevant websites back to your website.

They may charge a fixed fee and/or an ongoing fee, depends how they charge and what they are providing you. It's basically called SEO.

This is not to be confused with Google Adwords, sometimes referred to as paid links, and so causes confusion.

For example we charge a one off fee to optimise the site if it needs it, and an ongoing fee for link building, for as long or as little as customer wants. Some companies may charge an all-in fee and have minimum contracts. They vary. Sometimes we just do the onsite optimisation and the customer cant afford link building so they do their own.

Look - I never said you were, I said if you were.

It puts things into perspective as to what's worth taking on or not.

If you have enough money to create a strong business and get the approval from big brands then that's good. Though I wouldn't call them a few minor road blocks if the brands you want to use are big ones.

The Forum SEO Challenge... 3rd December 2010 3:42 PM
If I can point something out, the majority of people searching on that phrase will be looking (IMO) specifically for UKBF and not a forum based in the UK (eg uk business forum). That's just what I believe to be the case and why it won't convert quite as good which was my original point about conversion.

That's like me being No. 2 for Ferrari. Sure, it may have a lot of searches, but those people want the Ferrari website, and may only look at mine out of curiosity. Hope that explains my analogy of what I mean.

I end up on a forum almost always because of the question I have typed, be that a PC forum (more often than not in my case ) or any other forum. People dont generally search for a forum because they want to find online forums; not in the main anyhow. They search on a topic, question or whatever, and the search engine results throws up the forum.

If it's business related and your forum happens to have that same phrase, then voila! This is why some forums will edit thread titles from 'ltd company accounts problem' to 'How to fill in a CT600'.

If I had the time, and it was my forum, that's what I would be doing to slowly but surely attract traffic and thus conversion to sign up.
