DMOZ advice 9th August 2012 10:35 AM
Once upon a time DMOZ seemed to be the be all and end all. If you hadn't got your sites listed, you simply didn't know SEO, or so you where led to believe.

Nowadays, its still one of the better directories out there, and a listing can be beneficial, but don't expect to jump onto the first page of Google.

Use it as part of your overall efforts. Make the listing in DMOZ and if you have a a budget for it, also try Yahoo Dir, Best of The Web and a couple others.

Don't fret over how long it will take to get the listing in DMOZ. Simply add your site and move on. Check in a few months time to see if your listed, if not, re-add.

Focus on making your site the best it can be in between.
Page Rankings 9th August 2012 10:06 AM
hmmm interesting bump this, I haven't seen this post in a while

From what I have seen everyone is chasing down the almighty Google rank. It seems more important than any other search engine. Even in my training, there was more focus on Google than there was on Bing or Yahoo.

In all honesty, I don't really understand why one Search engine needs to be specifically hunted and the others almost neglected. Would it not be better to be found on all? I always think its best to just optimize your site for any eventuality and then build on that with social media, and in the end, the rankings will come.

(Maybe I'm just being backwards)

I'd agree - and who is to say you should put all your eggs in one basket? From what I've seen, sites do receive decent traffic from Bing when well positioned, and more often than not the conversion rates from this traffic can be a little higher. Its not all about the quantity of traffic.

A lot of the people that I talk to that use Bing (for example) use it as they have made a decision to do so, as they are fed up with the inconsistent and often spammy results on Google's first page. This tells me they feel get a better result returned to them for their search query. So conversion rates (although in smaller volumes) can be greater.

I agree Steve.
I have seen so many 'tricks' some and go. And when a 'trick' ceases to work, it takes down the rankings of the sites that exploited it. Whereas, stick to common sense tactics (that humans appreciate and respond to) and the ranking benefits are pretty much there for ever.

I agree, mostly.

I would go as far as to say they are not even 'tactics'. Its just standard common sense.

Google makes no bones about what it looks for as ranking factors. Make a site thats useful to your target audience, a site that tells you what its about, has some good content to help your users out and a site that is accessible.

Get the basics correct and spend a fair amount of time keeping it updated with useful content and your on the way. Wouldn't hurt to reach out to others in your niche either with some unique thought provoking content.

It might also be worth noting that Google are pretty active in this area (hardly surprising as its where much of their revenue is derived from), anyway, you can get in contact with an account manager at Google who will help guide you through the adwords set up process.

Much of the time they will set the campaigns up for you once you have opened an account, but I'd suggest looking up the numerous adwords help forums to get an idea of what's going on first. There are also Videos provided by Google that can help you get to grips with the Adwords interface.

A benefit of contacting Google is you can ask them directly for a voucher, saves looking around the web for one's that have probably expired.

To get the ball rolling, you can speak to one of their agents by calling them direct: 0800 169 0488
