Like anything its subjective. If you have a lot of time on your hands and some knowledge of SEO then its well worth a try doing it yourself. This can be hit and miss, requires a lot of time in terms of researching keywords, links farms and other technical things.

Basics mentioned such as updating twitter feeds, LinkedIn can easily down yourself. I don't think it is necessary to pay someone(or company) to do such task unless its included in a package where they're doing a number of other link building, social networking activities for you.

I see more of a argument for hire someone to do you SEO especially if you have checked them out properly, gotten testimonials and personal recommondations of there success on a campaign.

This all being said there are a lot of so called Social Media Experts, basically perople who think just because they use twitter and other sites all they that they can class themselves as some sort of experts. You should be able to show how you've added value and encourage if you are a Social Media Expert not just a few more followers. If you can show that then yes its work hiring one.
Its really about engaging and not trying to come across too hard with a sell. I would say facebook business pages aren't that great in terms of generating leads so not much focused is placed there. LinkedIn is good for discussion and engage of ideas. Twitter is good because once you get use to it, it is fairly easy to get you message across and isn't as time consuming and many other social networks. I think blogs offer consumers advice and valuable information can be really good. From there they can link to you web site and possible bring some business you way. This will also boost seo for your site as well.

Just had a quick read of the article and there were some very interesting points.
Social networks can be good for driving traffic to your website but it can be time consuming as well. It is good for awareness, staying connected and helping SEO optimisation. Its about striking a balance. If your spending countless hours using social networks and your not getting much in the way of increased traffic and/or engagement them maybe you should spend less time on it and adjust your strategy.

Think its good if you want to build some awareness and provide updates. Also for providing links to your site to help with SEO for your site. I would not consider facebook business pages as a good source to garner most of your business from though.
HP to stop making computers! 22nd August 2011 1:41 PM
A little surprised as felt as HP made pretty decent laptop computers. Hope their strategy when fully reveiled will work our for the them.
Steve I think that the question that you pose is a very good one. Social networking is good if use correctly. I do think that some individuals and business can get caught up in the number of likes, followers and general buzz received online when it doesn't always have a monetary of value based impact on the organisation. Sometimes too much time can be spent on social networking sites and forgetting that the daily task need to be done as well. So to summarise its about striking the right balance and actually connecting when you are using social networking.
