Gas Service Engineers
Repairs and maintenance on gas appliances should only be carried out by certified Gas Service Engineers.
The leading authority on gas safety issues in the UK is CORGI
CORGI has approximately 55,000 registered members across the UK, ensuring everyone has access to certified Gas Service Engineers.
If you need to have installation or repair work done on your gas appliances, then the engineer performing the work must be CORGI registered. Ensure you ask to see their CORGI identification card.
The CORGI website has a link allowing you to check the credentials of a CORGI registered engineer. You can select the link here or telephone CORGI - 0870 401 2300.
Make sure you have any gas appliances and boilers regularly serviced. If you are a landlord, then this is a legal requirement. If you are a tenant, ask to see a recent service certificate.
For peace of mind, install Carbon Monoxide detectors. This will make an audible alarm comparable with a smoke detector and retail from most good DIY stores for about £25.
The National Grid operates a 24 hour emergency service regardless of who your gas supplier is.
If you smell gas, call them immediately on 0800 111 999.
If you are calling from a mobile, leave the building first.
Do not smoke, turn on light switches, operate electrical devices or anything that has the potential to generate a spark.
Turn off the supply at the meter and ventilate the premises by opening windows and doors.
Wait outside for the emergency engineer to arrive.
